Gulmarg means the meadow of flowers. Originally Gulmarg was called Gaurimag named after Shiva’s coasts. Its present name was given in the 16th century by Sultan Yusuf Shah. The word "Gul" means flowers so it is also knows as Meadow of Flowers. Gulmarg is situated at an altitude of 2730 meters above sea level.
